"Being proactive in your life and career is what makes it enjoyable"

Anna Valio, an Associate within the Sustainable Banking team in Helsinki, started her career at SEB through the International Trainee Program in 2022. After having completed the programme Anna continued to explore the international career opportunities within the bank through a job rotation in Stockholm.
- I have always been interested in large, global phenomena, which initially sparked my interest in sustainability. My interest in finance led me to explore the role of banks in the green transition and how they can support companies in making meaningful changes. I wanted to take part in this and the trainee position within Sustainable Banking seemed like the best way to get involved.
Today, Anna works as an Associate, supporting clients whenever finance and sustainability meet. This could mean helping clients structure sustainability-linked loans or participating in larger restructurings that are linked to sustainability transformation. Supporting companies in making meaningful changes has become the core of her work, and it has proven to be as engaging as Anna imagined. -It’s rewarding to help companies transform their operations in a way that supports sustainability.
Moreover, Anna’s interest in working abroad has been a consistent theme throughout her career.
-I have always been drawn to international opportunities, having lived abroad in three different countries. During the International Trainee Programme, I realized how valuable it is to engage with both new colleagues and clients, and to build networks stretching as far as possible.
Job rotation in Stockholm
A two-week rotation during the Trainee Programme had piqued her interest in sustainability bonds, which led her to apply for a longer rotation with the same team. Soon, she was on her way to a new, four-month adventure in Stockholm.
- I really enjoyed my time in Stockholm. Getting to know a new city and familiarizing myself with new routines felt fulfilling in addition to the new job and people. - The rotation not only deepened my expertise but also broadened my perspective on the possibilities within sustainable finance.
Beyond her professional growth, Anna reflects on how personal growth, especially in terms of confidence, has been one of the most valuable takeaways.
-The rotation allowed me to build confidence in my own expertise. This has strengthened my self-confidence and helped me to take greater ownership of my work.
As Anna looks forward, she is eager to continue exploring new opportunities and challenges that come in her way. Anna believes that being pro-active and open to new experiences is crucial in finding fulfillment from your career.
-I recommend reflecting on the reasons why you want to do something. If you are unsure, it’s better to act - being proactive in your life and career is what makes it enjoyable. Things will always work out, you will find your ways of doing things and even better, you can always reinvent them!
